How to Direct Message on JOI
Direct Messages (DMs) are private conversations between you and another JOI. You can send a DM to someone to start a conversation with them and share information that only the two of you can see.
About Direct Messages
- You can start a private conversation with anyone who follows you.
- Any JOI that you don’t follow can send you a DM if:
- You have started a conversation with them before.
- You have enabled the setting to receive DMs from anyone.
- If someone has Direct Messages open to everyone, you can send them a DM even if they don’t follow you.
- You can’t be in a conversation with someone you have blocked.

Direct Message requests
When you have Direct Messages open to everyone, incoming messages from people you don’t follow will be moved to Message requests. Entering the conversation, you will be asked to Accept or Dismiss the request.

Choose Accept to start a conversation or Dismiss to decline the request. You can also choose Block to stop receiving messages from that person.
Direct Message read receipts
Currently, JOI doesn’t have read receipts for Direct Messages. This means that you won’t be able to see if someone has read your message or not and vice versa.
We may add this feature in the future.
Good to know about Direct Messages
- We currently don’t have a limit on the number of messages you can send or receive. Or the conversations you can have.
- Any media you send in a conversation will be viewable everyone in the conversation. Please keep in mind that people may download and share your media.
- When you delete a message or conversation, it will be removed from your inbox only. Other JOIs in the conversation will still be able to see the message or conversation, even after you delete it.
Our take on sharing personal information
As stated in our Community Guidelines, we seriously discourage sharing personal information like your address, phone number, or any other real-world information with others on JOI.
JOI is a place where everyone can leave their worries behind and have fun being anyone they want to be. We want to keep it that way.
If you decide to share personal information with someone, please be cautious and make sure you trust them. The person you’re talking to IS NOT who they say they are, and that’s the beauty of JOI. As stated in our Terms of Service, you are responsible for the information you share on JOI.
If someone is repeatedly asking for personal information or making you uncomfortable, please report them to us.
