How to use hashtags
A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a hash symbol (#), used to identify messages on a specific topic. Hashtags can be included anywhere in a post.
Why use hashtags?
- Hashtags make your content discoverable by people interested in the topic.
- People can click or tap on a hashtag to see other posts that include the same hashtag.
- Hashtags can help you meet new people with similar interests.
Hashtag best practices
- Hashtags cannot contain spaces or punctuation.
- If you use hashtags in a post, make sure they are relevant to the topic, as people will find your post when they search for that hashtag.
- Four hashtags per post is a good number, not cluttering the post but still making it discoverable. You can still use as many hashtags as you want though.
Good to know: See our search guide for more information on how to search for hashtags.
Character count for hashtags
We made a choice to change the way our Post Composer counts characters. We count hashtags as one character each, regardless of the number of characters in the hashtag.
We want to make sure you can express yourself freely without worrying about leaving out a hashtag because it’s too long.
Important to know:
- We still enforce our Community Guidelines, so please make sure you don’t misuse hashtags filling your post with irrelevant hashtags just to get more visibility. Don’t abuse this feature.
