How to Create a Group Chat

Get all your friends together in one place by creating a group chat.

How to create a group chat

Go to your Messages by clicking the Messages (it looks like a mail icon) icon in the navigation bar.
Click the Send a message button, it looks like a paper airplane.
Tap the Create a group button.
In the search box, type the name or username of the JOIs you want to add to the group. Once you find them, tap their profile to add them to the group. As you add JOIs, you will see them listed at the top of the screen, and you can remove them by tapping the X next to their name. Don’t worry if you forget someone, you can always add more JOIs to the group later.
When you’re ready, tap the Next button. You can give your group a name and choose if it’s a public or private group:
- Public group: Your group will be listed in the group directory, and anyone can join without an invitation.
- Private group: Only the group members can invite others to join.
You can always change these settings later.
Tap the Create button to create your group chat.

That’s it! You’ve created a group chat, you can now start chatting with your friends!

Good to know:

Group chats can have up to 15 members. If the group owner is a Plus subscriber, the group can have up to 100 members.
Each JOI direct settings may affect their ability to be invited to a group chat.
You can snooze notifications for a group chat or leave the group at any time just like a regular conversation.
If you leave a private group chat, you can’t rejoin unless someone invites you back.
If you block or mute someone that is in a group chat with you, you will still see their messages in the group chat.

Important to know: You’ll need the Invite Members permission to invite someone to a group chat.

Go to the group chat you want to invite someone to.
Tap the Group info button (it looks like an i in a circle) at the top right of the screen.
Tap the Add people button.
In the search box, type the name or username of the JOI you want to add to the group. Once you find them, tap their profile to add them to the group. As you add JOIs, you will see them listed at the top of the screen, and you can remove them by tapping the X next to their name.
Tap the Add button to invite them to the group chat.
You can also tap the Invite button to copy the group chat link and share it with others so they can join.

Important to know: You’ll need the Manage Group permission to edit a group chat.

Go to the group chat you want to edit.
Tap the Group info button (it looks like an i in a circle) at the top right of the screen.
Tap the Edit details button.
You can change the group name, photo, banner, the group visibility, and even add a description if it’s a public group.
If your group chat is public and it will contain sensitive content, please make sure to mark it as NSFW (Not Safe For Work).
Tap the Save button to save your changes.

Important to know: You’ll need the Kick members permission to remove someone from a group chat.

Go to the group chat you want to remove someone from.
Tap the Group info button (it looks like an i in a circle) at the top right of the screen.
Search for the JOI you want to remove from the group. Once you find them, tap the icon and select the Kick option.

Please note that any member you kick can still rejoin the group chat, if you don’t want them to rejoin, ban them instead.

Important to know: You’ll need the Ban members permission to remove someone from a group chat.

Go to the group chat you want to ban someone from.
Tap the Group info button (it looks like an i in a circle) at the top right of the screen.
Search for the JOI you want to ban from the group. Once you find them, tap the icon and select the Ban option.
Done, now they can’t rejoin the group chat.

Good to know: If someone is creating alts to rejoin the group chat and harass you or other members, please report them

Important to know: You’ll need the Ban members permission to remove someone from a group chat.

Go to the group chat you want to ban someone from.
Tap the Group info button (it looks like an i in a circle) at the top right of the screen.
Select Banned members, find the JOI you want and tap Unban.
